Warren’s Grove:  The Art of Worship

“See, the LORD has called by name…and He has filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, with intelligence, with knowledge, and with all craftsmanship, to devise artistic designs, to work in gold and silver and bronze, in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, for work in every skilled craft…” (Exodus 35:30-33, NIV)

Commonly Asked Questions about the art ministry at Warren’s Grove UMC:

Q:  What is this “art show” stuff I’ve been hearing about at Warren’s Grove?

A:  Warren’s Grove will be hosting “art shows,” which will display its attendees’ artwork, developed according to a specified theme.  The hope is that the theme will correlate with other forms of worship occurring within the church at the time of the show (i.e., sermons, events, etc.).

 Q:  Who can contribute?

A:  You need not be a “professional artist” in order to make a submission.  The point of these shows is to allow us all to explore our ability to worship our Lord through the unique skills He has given each and every one of us.  Please don’t let any uncertainties regarding your ability prevent you from participating!

Q:  How long will the art be displayed?

A:  These shows are temporary (lasting approximately 3 months at a time).  Afterward, the art will be returned to the artist.

Q:  What do I need to submit with my artwork?

A:  Artists are responsible for providing:

  1. An appropriate method of hanging/display (frame, stand, etc.)
  2. An art SUBMISSION FORM

Q:  When can I submit art?

A:  All submissions must be turned in at least 2 weeks before the art show start date to allow time for hanging and appropriate display (see Art Show Schedule).

Q:  Are there any limitations or guidelines for my art?

A:  Generally, the artist is free to interpret the theme in any way he or she chooses.  However, the artist must keep in mind the audience that will be appreciating his or her work, and avoid any subject matter that may cause strife or dissension within the church body.  If you have any questions, or are unsure about this, ask Amanda Gardner, art coordinator for Warren’s Grove.

Q:  What is the theme of the first art show, and when will it begin?

A:  The first theme will be “Light.” The start date will be Sunday, April 8th, 2012 (submissions must be turned in by Sunday, March 25th, 2012).
